Basics
Lifespan: 12-20 years in captivity
Adult Size: 14-36 inches (females larger than males)
Temperament: Generally docile, known for their dramatic bluffing displays



Enclosure
• Size:
• Hatchlings: 10-gallon equivalent
• Juveniles/Adults: 20-gallon long or larger
• Substrate: Aspen, paper towel, or reptile bedding (avoid cedar or pine)
• Hides: 1-2 snug hides, plus décor for burrowing and enrichment
• Humidity: 30-50% (avoid excessive moisture)
• Temperature Gradient:
• Warm side: 88-92°F
• Cool side: 75-80°F
• Nighttime: No lower than 70°F
• Heating: Under-tank heating pad with a thermostat or heat lamp



Diet
• Main Food: Frozen-thawed mice (appropriately sized for body width)
• Feeding Schedule:
• Hatchlings: Every 4-5 days
• Juveniles: Every 5-7 days
• Adults: Every 7-10 days
• Supplements: No additional supplementation needed for a rodent diet
• Water: Fresh, clean water in a shallow dish



Handling & Behavior
• Handle gently and support their body
• May bluff by hissing, flattening, or playing dead—harmless behavior
• Rarely bite, but always wash hands after handling



Shedding & Health
• Shedding: Ensure proper humidity and a humid hide if needed
