Ball Pythons
General Care Info
Good for newbies and seasoned keepers

Overview
Ball pythons (Python regius) are popular pets known for their docile nature and manageable size. With proper care, they can live for 20-30 years.
Enclosure
Size:For hatchlings, a 10-20 gallon tank is sufficient. Sub-Adults and Small Adults need a 30-40 gallon enclosure. Large Adults should be housed in a 120 gallon enclosure (preferably made from PVC).
Type: PVC enclosures, glass terrariums or plastic tubs with secure lids are ideal.
Substrate: Bioactive is best. You can also use aspen bedding, cypress mulch, or paper towels. Avoid cedar or pine shavings.
Temperature & Humidity
Hot Spot: Maintain a hot spot area of 88-92°F (31-33°C).
Cool Side: Keep the cooler side of the tank around 75-80°F (24-27°C).
Humidity: Maintain humidity levels between 60-70%. Increase to 80% during shedding.
Heating & Lighting
Heat Source: Use an under-tank heater (UTH) or radiant heat panel. Ensure it’s regulated by a thermostat.
Lighting: Ball pythons don’t require special lighting, but a day/night cycle is beneficial.
Hides & Decor
Hides: Provide at least two hiding spots—one on the warm side and one on the cool side.
Decor: Include branches and artificial or living plants for enrichment.
Feeding
Diet: Feed pre-killed or frozen-thawed rodents (e.g., mice or rats). Food should be approximately the same circumference as your snakes thickest part.
Schedule: Juveniles eat every 5-7 days; adults every 7-14 days.
Water: Always provide fresh water in a sturdy dish.
Handling
Frequency: Handle regularly but gently to acclimate your snake.
Tips: Support their body and avoid handling for for 24-48 hours after feeding.
Health & Maintenance
Shedding: Ensure humidity is adequate for proper shedding. Use a humid hide if needed.
Cleaning: Spot-clean daily and do a full enclosure clean monthly.
Monitoring: Watch for signs of illness, such as lethargy, refusal to eat, or respiratory issues.
Fun Facts
Nature: Ball pythons are called "royal pythons" because ancient royalty reportedly wore them as jewelry.
Behavior: They are known to curl into a ball when stressed, hence the name “ball python.”
